Active Engagement Strategies

There is a lot you can do at home to support your child with their reading. Here are just a few suggestions:

  • Always encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes per day outside of school hours. When they have finished reading ask them questions about the text. E.g. What did they learn about the character or plot? What do they think might happen next? Can they make a prediction based upon their knowledge of the book so far? What techniques does the author use to engage the reader? Below you will find a PowerPoint with suggestions you can easily use / adapt at home.
  • Encourage your child to use a dictionary to define any new words they might come across whilst reading. They could write these words down in a glossary, and be tested on the spelling and meaning. SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) is an important part of the new GCSE specifications and so we encourage the pupils to extend their vocabulary at every opportunity.
